Native American Histories

The Great and Little Osage and the Missouri tribes were native to Missouri. Other Native American nations, such as the Delaware, Shawnee, and Kickapoo had originally lived east of the Mississippi and were forced to move west by white settlement. The Spanish colonial government in St. Louis welcomed them in to provide a buffer against the Osage. There was friction between the new nations and the Osage.  After Missouri was a U. S. territory, American settlers moved in and wanted the land. Eventually, all of the nations were removed to Kansas and to Oklahoma.
On the internet, t
here is a growing number of sites on these Native American nations.

See the following site for a history of the Osage, most of which applies to Missouri. It is taken from an online history of Kansas,  William G. Cutler,  History of the State of Kansas, 1883, from The Kansas Collection, University of Kansas.
