This will be a new certificate program pending completion of the curricular review process. It has been approved by the Graduate Council.
The Department of History plans to offer a 15-hour Graduate Certificate designed for in-service high school teachers. The certificate program will provide teachers with additional content training to assist them in furthering their career. There are three tracks designed to enhance their knowledge as U. S. or world history teachers.
Admission to the certificate program requires admission to the Missouri State University Graduate College. Please go to the Graduate College website, online catalog, Graduate Certificate Program Procedures for more information. You can apply online at the Graduate College website.
A student must have a Missouri teaching certificate in social studies and a minimum GPA of 3.00.
HST 701 Historiography and Historical Methods
12 hours in the U. S. History Track, World History Track, or Secondary Education Track
U. S. History Track: HST 720 Proseminar in American History; Primary Source Proseminar in U. S. history (such as HST 783, 784, 785, 786, or 787); Two 600-level courses in U. S. history (or proseminars or HST 796 readings courses in U. S. history)
World History Track: Two Proseminars in non-U. S. history (such as HST 740, 760, or 770) including HST 790 Proseminar in World History; Two 600-level courses in non-U. S. history (or proseminars or HST 796 readings courses in non-U. S. history)
Secondary Education Track: HST 702 Secondary School Curriculum for Social Studies; Proseminar (in U. S. or non-U. S. history); Graduate-level education course: SFR 650 Philosophy of Education, PSY 605 Psychology of Adolescence, or another education course approved by the student's graduate certificate advisor; 600-level course in U. S. or non-U. S. history (or proseminar or HST 796 readings course in U. S. or non-U. S. history)
A student should work with the certificate program advisor to complete the Plan of Study form which lists all of the courses to be used toward fulfillment of certificate completion requirements. The form is available at the Graduate College website.
Students must have an overall GPA of 3.00 for completion of the certificate program.
A Notification to Complete a Certificate Program form, available at the Graduate College website, must be submitted to the Graduate College during the semester in which the student plans to complete the program requirements.
