Students who began the MA history graduate program during or after the fall of 2007:
Hours of graduate credit for the Master of Arts in History must include a minimum of 18 hours at the 700 level and consist in total of a minimum of 30 hours distributed as follows:
Core Requirements
HST 701, Historiography and Historical Method
Seminar. Completion of at least one seminar. (This is required even if the student chooses to complete the research requirement through the thesis option.)
Primary Source Proseminar. Completion of at least one 700-level course in the Use and Understanding of Sources, such as HST 783, 784, 785, 786, and 787, that studies primary sources in a historical field.
Total: 9 hours
Tracks
Along with completing the core requirements, students must choose one of the following tracks: American Studies track, Global Area Studies track, or U. S. and World track.
American Studies Track
The core requirement seminar must be in U. S. history or American Studies. (If taking the thesis option, both a seminar and the thesis must be in U. S. history or American Studies.)
Primary Source Proseminars. Minimum of 2 primary source proseminars in U. S. history or American Studies
Two proseminars in U. S. history or American Studies. (One proseminar in U. S. history or American Studies if you complete the thesis option.)
American Studies Interdisciplinary Courses. With the consent of the candidate’s advisory committee, nine hours of graduate credit must be taken in American Studies related disciplines such as American art, culture, film, folklore, government, literature, or music.
Global Area Studies Track
The core requirement seminar must be in non-U. S. history. (If taking the thesis option, both a seminar and the thesis must be in non-U. S. history. The thesis must be in the emphasis area of study such as Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East.)
Three proseminars in non-U. S. history. (Two proseminars in non-U. S. history if you complete the thesis option.)
At least one Proseminar in World History
At least one Proseminar in the emphasis area of study such as Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East
Emphasis Area. Minimum of 9 hours, including a proseminar, in the emphasis area of study such as Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East
At least one course in U. S. in the world or U. S. foreign relations or recent history of the U. S.
U. S. and World Track
Along with the core requirements, one of the following distributions of courses:
1) A minimum of 12 hours in U.S. history, including a seminar and two proseminars (a thesis, seminar, and one proseminar if a student completes the thesis option), and at least 6 hours in non-U.S. history, including a proseminar.
2) A minimum of 12 hours in non-U.S. history, including a seminar and two proseminars (a thesis, seminar, and one proseminar if a student completes the thesis option), and at least 6 hours in U.S. history, including a proseminar.
Secondary Education Sub-track
This sub-track, open only to in-service teachers, consists of 9 hours of the 30 hour minimum requirement for completion of the History MA. The sub-track can be taken in conjunction with any one of the three tracks listed above.
HST 702 Secondary School Curriculum for the Social Studies
Six hours of graduate-level education courses in Philosophy of Education (SFR 650), Psychology of Adolescence (PSY 605), or other education courses approved by the student's graduate committee.

History 601-Historiography and Historical Method
Three proseminars. (Two proseminars if you complete the thesis option.)
Seminar. (This constitutes the research requirement. You can choose to write a thesis to meet the research requirement, but you must still take the seminar.)
A minimum of 18 hours of 600-level courses.
One of the two following distributions of courses:
1) A major concentration in U.S. history with a minimum of 12 hours, including a seminar and two proseminars (a thesis, seminar, and one proseminar if you complete the thesis option), and a minor concentration of at least six hours in non-U.S. history, including a proseminar.
2) A major concentration in non-US history with a minimum of 12 hours, including a seminar and two proseminars (a thesis, seminar, and one proseminar if you complete the thesis option), and a minor concentration of at least six hours in U.S. history, including a proseminar.
