Financial Support

The Department of History pending funding awards fall-spring graduate assistantships and a summer graduate assistantship.

Fall-spring assistantships have included a stipend of around $7,000 and a tuition waiver which will cover the standard semester load of 9 hours of history graduate credit. Those awarded an assistantship during the spring semester have also been eligible for a fee waiver scholarship during the following summer term up to 6 hours of history graduate credit.

A summer assistantship has also been available with a smaller stipend and a tuition waiver for up to 6 hours of history graduate credit.

For fee-waiver purposes, graduate credit hours taken in the intersession prior to the semester are part of the allowable fee-waiver limits of that semester (i.e., 15 hours limit in the fall, 15 hours limit in the spring, 6 hours limit in the summer).

Each graduate assistant is provided a computer (during the assistantship) and there is a scanner and printer in the graduate assistants’ office.

A full assistantship is awarded for one academic year only, but it is renewable. To be eligible for reappointment, the student should perform satisfactorily in the duties of the assistantship, complete 9 hours a semester in history graduate work, and maintain a minimum 3.3 GPA in graduate work at Missouri State.

Assistantships are available only to students enrolled in a history graduate program. To apply students must 1) be admitted to a history graduate program or be in the process of admission with the Graduate College (which includes sending the Graduate College the official transcripts of all non-Missouri State University undergraduate and graduate work to date), 2) submit three letters of recommendation, and 3) fill out and submit an application form. Students may obtain applications online at http://graduate.missouristate.edu/forms.htm
Submit the assistantship application form and the letters of recommendation to Professor F. Thornton Miller in the History Department. Direct questions to Prof. F. Thornton Miller. The application date for fall 2009, spring 2010, and summer 2010 assistantships is March 31, 2009.
