Purpose

The annual Missouri State University History Bowl is co-sponsored by the Theta-Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta and the Missouri State Department of History. History Bowl is designed to stimulate students’ interest in history, current events, and public affairs, while recognizing and rewarding their achievement. History Bowl also strengthens ties between the MSU Department of History and the secondary schools which both employ our graduates and teach prospective college students.

Awards and Scholarships

History Bowl team members receive certificates of participation, and the top two teams are awarded both individual and team trophies. The Marie-France Jones Scholarship (approximately $1,300) is awarded to an outstanding senior from any team. Two History Bowl Scholarships (approximately $1,000 each) go to outstanding junior or senior members of the first or second place teams. 

Team sponsors/coaches nominate students for these scholarships. Letters of nomination should attest to the student’s potential for studying history at Missouri State University. Faculty sponsors can nominate their team members by writing a letter or sending an email to the Missouri State University history department.

Registration and Rules

The next History Bowl will be held on Wednesday March 18, 2009 in the Plaster Student Union Ballroom. Please read the rules carefully, as the format has been revised. The deadline for registration is Monday, February 9, but please register as early as possible. Schools may enter more than one team but we will accept all first teams before accepting any second teams. If you enter more than one team and space prevents our accepting your second team, you may revise your first team’s roster.

To register, please send the following information to Prof. William Piston by email or regular mail:

• School name and mailing address
• The names, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of team sponsors/coaches
• Names of team members as you wish them to appear on the certificates of participation. Please identify the captain.
