Missouri State University is approved by the Missouri State Board of Education (MSBE) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) to offer basic and advanced professional education programs for the purpose of professional certification. History is the curricular home of the program leading to Social Science, 9-12, certification. Teaching certification for secondary social studies is provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Our BSEd graduates hold teaching positions across the State of Missouri and throughout the Midwest. They teach a range of courses from U.S. History to World History and Cultures, Psychology, and Sociology. The Department of History’s BSEd program in Social Science meets or exceeds the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) education accreditation criteria, and the program is "nationally recognized" by NCSS. The Department of History also offers MSEd programs in history and in social science.
The BSEd Social Science program was reviewed by NCATE and DESE in the spring of 2003. As part of our internal evaluation, Dr. William Hammond, History Education Coordinator (now retired), developed a program review and a set of appendices which are available on demand. In August 2000, we submitted a revised version of this material as our Social Studies Education Curriculum Portfolio to NCSS/NCATE for review. In February of 2001, the reviewing committee commented that our program meets all NCSS standards and rated it "exceptionally strong." Dr. Jamaine Abidogun utilized this initial curriculum portfolio as a foundation for the development of the current BSEd program in Social Science PEU Accreditation Report (Scroll down in PEU Accreditation Report to "Social Studies.")
Use this two page form to check your coursework against the current requirements. Page one is a checklist of coursework for the BSEd program. The second page delineates the professional education part of the program including the sequencing of courses. If you can, print both pages on one sheet of paper. After checking coursework which is complete, you may print the form and bring it with you for personal advising.
The MSEd program guidelines and core course requirements are listed here. This is a temporary link while the Masters Program page is updated.
In an effort to streamline professional education programs so that degree programs fall within 125 credit hours, the Professional Education Unit has reduced the pedagogy core from 37 to 28 hours. The new program took effect in the fall of 2003 though some curriculum changes will not be complete until August of 2004. All students seeking certification in social studies should see their advisors prior to registering for the fall semester of 2004.
There are three levels of advising in this program. The first is the general advising given in the Academic Advisement Center to new students, the second is the History department's advising system for social studies majors, and the third is advising offered in the Professional Education Advisement Center.
Each student in the program is assigned an academic advisor within the history department. For questions about the program students should ask their advisor first, if necessary students may also contact the program coordinator:
Jamaine Abidogun (417) 836-5916 Upon declaration of a BSEd major through the Department of History, the department secretary will assign a permanent member of the History faculty to the student. The department strongly advises teacher education majors to see their advisors at least once a semester.
If you have questions concerning the BSEd in Social Science program, certification, or Masters of Science in Education with social studies or history concentration, use this form to send e-mail to Dr. Abidogun.
