Programs

  • Bachelor of Arts
Did you know that Lee Iacocca and George W. Bush were history majors? So were Martha Stuart, Carly Fiorina, Conan O'Brien, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Antonin Scalia, Jimmy Buffet, Jackie Joyner Kersie, Kathryn Hepburn, and W. E. B. DuBois. Here is a helpful checklist so that you can follow in their footsteps. Model four-year graduation plan.
  • Teacher Education Program
History houses the most productive social science certification program in Missouri. Our program meets the requirements set by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education together with NCATE, our accrediting agency. Here is another helpful checklist.  Model four-year graduation plan.
  • Graduate Program
The M.A. program provides a good foundation for further graduate study in History. It's also an excellent program for secondary education teachers seeking to enrich their general understanding of history. We currently support five graduate assistantships. Our M.A.s are found in professional positions all over the Midwest. Some have earned doctoral degrees at prestigious institutions, but quite a few have gone into business. Missouri Seventh District congressman and former Majority Whip, Roy Blunt, is among our most notable alumni.
  • Graduate Certificate Program (New)
This new program builds on courses created by departmental faculty advised by in-service teachers as part of a Teaching American History project. Rigorous testing indicates that this certificate program can increase student performance on nationally normed tests.
  • Minors in History
Minors are required in all but comprehensive degree programs. The History minor is particularly efficient because it allows flexibility, and two of the courses can be counted in General Education.
