Please fill out the History Department Scholarship Application to apply for the scholarships listed below. Hard copy applications also are available in the History Department, Strong Hall 410. If you also are applying for non-History Department scholarships you also need to fill out the MSU General Scholarship Application, which is available through the Office of Student Financial Aid, Carrington Hall 101. Students wishing to claim financial need should complete and submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to the MSU Office of Student Financial Aid at least two weeks before the scholarship deadline.
Return your completed application for History scholarships to the History Department office, Strong Hall 410, Missouri State University, 901 S. National Avenue, Springfield, MO 65897. The deadline for turning in completed applications for 2008-2009 scholarships is March 31, 2009. Award values below are approximate.
Duane G. Meyer Endowed
History Scholarship ($800)
Preference will be given to student enrolled at the graduate level in
History. To be eligible, graduate
students must be enrolled in 9 hours each semester and undergraduates must
be enrolled in 12 hours each semester. An undergraduate recipient must be a junior or senior.
The recipient must have a 3.0GPA in History Department classes.
The recipient must have a career interest in museum administration and have
worked, interned, or volunteered at the History Museum of
Springfield-Greene County. May be considered for renewal but must
reapply. Award will be made without regard for financial need.
Wayne C. Bartee
Scholarship ($325)
Student must be a undergraduate history major (with Non-United States history
emphasis) enrolled in at least 12 hours each semester, and have completed 3 non-US history courses with GPA of 3.0
in these courses. Preference will be given to applicants
with financial need.
Robert Anthony
Foster History Scholarship ($650)
Student must be a junior
or senior history major enrolled in at least 12 hours each semester.
Student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 and a GPA of 3.0 in
history courses. Preference will be given to students with the greatest financial
need.
Mabel Friend Study
Club Scholarship ($1,400)
Student must be a sophomore or above history major enrolled in at least
nine hours with a 2.5 cumulative GPA. Preference will be given to
applicants with financial need.
Judy Owens Geisler
Memorial Scholarship ($1,050)
Student must be a full-time
history major who has completed 24 hours with a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Recipient must be involved in public affairs through participation in
campus or community service organizations. Preference is given to a
female student from a rural Missouri high school. Preference will be
given with regard to financial need.
H. D. Harmon
Scholarship ($1,400)
Student must be a history or
political science major enrolled in at least twelve hours each semester. Recipient must be a sophomore or above with a
3.0 cumulative GPA. Given to history majors in even-numbered years
only. Awards will be made with regard to financial need.
Mary Margaret Long
Hickman Scholarship ($600)
Student must be enrolled in at
least six hours each semester as a history major and plan to be a teacher. Recipient must
have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and demonstrate financial need. Preference is
given to women over 30 years of age who are returning to school.
History Bowl
Scholarship ($1,000) 2 available
Student must be the
outstanding junior or senior member of the first or second place team in
the annual Missouri State History Bowl competition. Nomination by
sponsoring high school teacher is required.
Leo Huff Scholarship
($1,100)
Student must be a full-time history major who demonstrates
academic performance, leadership and potential.
Marie-France Jones
Memorial Scholarship ($1,300)
Student must be an outstanding high school senior participant in the
annual Missouri State History Bowl competition. Nomination by
sponsoring high school teacher is required.
Gerald "Pete" McCormick
Memorial History Scholarship ($900)
Student must be full-time undergraduate or masters program in history.
First preference to applicant interested in Civil War history or
military history. Student shall submit a one page paper outlining
their applicable experience and interest in the same. If no one applies
under this criteria it can be given to an applicant with a broad
interest in history. GPA 3.0 in history. Preference will be
given to applicants with financial need.
Phi Alpha Theta
Scholarship ($675)
Student must be a current member of the
Theta Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. Recipient must be enrolled in at
least nine hours if an undergraduate or six hours if a graduate student.
Must have completed 12 hours of history courses with a GPA of at least
3.2 and have a 3.0 GPA in two-thirds of all non-history course work.
James W. Shannon
Memorial Scholarship ($800)
Student
must be a junior or senior history major with a 3.0 cumulative GPA with
financial need.
Robert E. Smith History
Scholarship ($250)
Student must be enrolled as
a history major with a demonstrated interest in modern European military
history or modern European history in general. Overall minimum GPA of
2.5 and 3.0 in history courses. Part-time or full-time students are all
eligible without regard to financial need.
